The Foundry Nuke is today the most used vfx compositing tool in the world. The path within this course will allow you to understand why in all the factories in the world, from the smallest to the largest, it is used to create what until the last decade was considered unimaginable.

The teacher

Giuseppe Lombardi has been actively working since 2009 on more than 10 international films and 50 commercials.
He has collaborated with Academy Award winning studios such as Double Negative and Framestore and Ghost VFX.
He currently works as a VFX Compositor for Cinesite London.

Recommended requirements:

Knowledge of Win / Mac / Linux Operating Systems, use of the graphic tablet (Wacom)

Necessary knowledge:

No specific knowledge of Nuke is required for this course as all the basic compositing techniques will be covered in an exhaustive manner. On the other hand, a general knowledge of computer graphics may be useful.

Program:

-The Nuke interface: an exhaustive overview of its potential and the different tools that allow customization.
-What are the Nodes. The revolution of the nodal system.
– Import an image. The viewer, LUTs and colourspace.
-Logarithmic and linear.
-Matte and Roto. Create a mask and a Matte using splines.
-The Paint. All the possibilities in deep of this powerful node.
– Merge operations. Plus, over,
-Pre-multiplication of images. What it is and how it works.
-The transformation nodes. Move, scale and crop pixels using the User Interface, the curve editor and dope sheet.
– The Write node. Render with relative and absolute paths.
-Case Study 1. Put into practice the first notions on footage of real video and film productions.
-Blur and Motion Blur. Motion Blur Camera and Moving Objects. What happens in the lens and how to simulate it digitally.
-Green Screen and Blue Screen. Understand how the nodes that allow the extraction of a subject or an element work. Luma, Keylight, Primatte how to use them to make a key.
– Despill operations
– Motion tracking: matchmoving and stabilization. Draw a pattern by step one or by keyframe. Multiple possibilities of 2d stabilization.
– The 3d space of nuke.
-Import room and geometry in 3d space, move and create 2.5D compositions within the application.
-Render and understand Nuke Scanline Render settings and possibilities.
– Camera tracker and 3d projections. How they work and how to use them.
-A detailed introduction to Multipass compositing. Check separately the various elements of an image generated in 3d and the use of Nuke channels.
-Case Study 2. To put into practice the notions acquired on footage of real video and film productions.

Summary:

Introduction to Nuke and Compositing: learn to know all the basic techniques of this art and, through the use of targeted shots and practical training, slowly discover all the many possibilities.

The course is particularly suitable for beginners, those who have recently approached this genre and is, ideal, also for those who come from other compositing tools such as After Effects, Shake or Combustion or nearby sectors such as Montage, 3d modeling or Digital Photo Editing.

Students are advised to bring their personal projects with them.

Intermediate Nuke Compositing

Duration in hours: 40 hours (1 week)

Period: 21-25 September 2015

Recommended requirements: Familiarity with the use of Nuke and with the concepts behind digital compositing.

Program:

-The pipeline in large post production studios.
-3d relight & 3d retexturing.
-Model Builder and Possion Mesh.
– introduction to the creation of Gizmo.
-Rig removal and Clean up. Basics to become a prep artist.
-Intermediate key exercises, such as approaching a greenscreen with characters in the foreground.
– Lens distortion.
-Understanding the lens. How it works and how to simulate its operation in the digital image.
– Grain and Final touches, black levels, sharpness include photorealistic integration of two or more elements.
-Case Study 3. To put into practice the notions acquired on footage of real video and film productions.

Summary:

This in-depth course is designed as a continuation of the introductory Nuke course; analyzes in detail the practical techniques of professional compositing for films, considering various possibilities and problems and thus marking the difference that exists between a simple enthusiast and a good compositor.

Giuseppe Lombardi will help you develop a solid knowledge of the software, its 3D space, photorealistic integration and the techniques necessary to be an attractive and prepared professional figure.
