Hi Guys, today we’ll learn some tricks to improve the Depth of Field Quality (DoF) in our cinematic scene in Unreal Engine, in this tutorial by William Faucher.
Depth of field (DoF), is the distance between the closest and farthest objects in a photo that appears acceptably sharp, is one of the most important concepts in photography, let’s see how to recreate it in 3d in Unreal Engine.
How to improve Depth of Field Quality in Unreal Engine?
We’ll be taking a look at how to fix the terrible Depth of Field that comes by default in UE4. With a simple console command, we can improve the quality of our renders as well. Enjoy!

DoF is influenced by several factors:
Aperture adjustment
Wide apertures, which are related to small f-stops, produce a very shallow depth of field. On the other hand, small apertures or large f-stops produce images with a large depth of field.
Distance between the camera and the subject
Another important factor affecting the depth of field is the distance between the camera and the subject. The smaller the distance, the smaller the depth of field.
Wide-angle lenses (short focal lengths) have a greater depth of field than telephoto lenses (long focal lengths). Well, not exactly, try it yourself.
