It took a few days to recover from the new teaser Enemies, Unity released. An incredible two-minute in CG teaser showcasing the capabilities of the new Unity game engine for creating photorealistic digital humans, including a new hair system, displaying computational power on par with UE5.

Unity has significantly strengthened its digital human technology, in part through the acquisition of the VFX Weta Digital facility and its internal tools, and more recently, Ziva Dynamics.

Digital humans in Unity

Enemies expand on the work done for The Heretic, which featured Unity’s first realistic digital human.
Improvements include:

  • A better 4D pipeline
  • Skin Attachment system on the GPU to allow for high-density meshes (e.g., peach fuzz)
  • More realistic eyes with caustics on the iris
  • A new skin shader
  • Tension tech for blood flow simulation and wrinkle maps, eliminating the need for a facial rig for fine details

Unity just canceled Metahuman
